Volunteer Scotland was proud to once again sponsor the Volunteer of the Year award.
Every nominee shared a powerful story of selflessness, dedication and impact. Each is a shining example of how volunteers are the beating heart of our communities. These individuals are not just giving their time – they are transforming lives.
What makes this category so meaningful is that it celebrates everyday people doing extraordinary things, often quietly and consistently. Whether supporting emergency services, tackling isolation, or providing a lifeline to those living with health conditions, volunteers make a difference that goes far beyond what can be measured in hours or outcomes.
Jim Cassidy’s journey is one of transformation and impact. He first came to Men Matter Scotland feeling angry and struggling with his mental health. Through peer support, open conversations and wellbeing activities, he experienced a life-changing improvement.
Motivated by gratitude, Jim became a volunteer at the organisation’s Drumchapel hub, now dedicating three days a week to supporting others. He plays a vital role in welcoming men, supporting those in crisis, driving the minibus, and contributing to outreach work, talks and prison programmes.
Despite ongoing health challenges, Jim has completed multiple mental health qualifications and now mentors’ others — often serving as the first friendly face men encounter when seeking help.
Jamie Rutherford, Director, Men Matter Scotland, said:
“At Men Matter Scotland, more than 30 volunteers help us deliver life-saving support to men at the point of suicide. We simply couldn’t do this work without people like Jim. He came through our doors in crisis, and now his contribution is critical to helping us support more than 500 men each week. We’re delighted to see Jim recognised with this award. His journey shows just how far it is possible to come — from our darkest places to living in the light.”
The runners-up were equally deserving of recognition:
Being part of the awards highlights, just how essential volunteers are — not only in times of crisis, but in everyday life. At Volunteer Scotland, we are proud to champion and celebrate their contributions through initiatives such as Volunteers’ Week and the Volunteering Action Plan.
To all nominees, finalists and winners: thank you. You remind us of what community truly looks like, and why volunteering is essential.
