Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2023 Winners!

We at Volunteer Scotland were proud to sponsor the ‘Volunteer Champion Award’ at the annual Social Enterprise Awards Scotland this year.

Our mission is to create a Scotland where everyone can volunteer, more often, and throughout their lives and for volunteering to be an enjoyable, rewarding and fulfilling experience for every volunteer. So we were thrilled to be able to recognise and celebrate the amazing efforts and impact of Scotland’s volunteers with this award.

The Awards, organised by Social Enterprise Scotland, recognise excellence and outstanding achievements by social enterprises – businesses that reinvest their profits for social and environmental good – that demonstrate they’re improving and building a better economy and fairer society.

New for 2023 the ‘Volunteer Champion Award’ celebrated an individual who went above and beyond to make a difference in a social enterprise. Four volunteers were shortlisted, and the winner was announced on 26th October at the Scottish Parliament. The 2023 Winner was Janie Conlon, tartan volunteer from Grassmarket Community Project.

Janie works hard at Grassmarket Community Project, inspiring staff, members, and volunteers to create a successful, profitable Tartan Social Enterprise. With her guidance, vulnerable adults with no experience in sewing make items that are sold in a shop, online, Visit Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle. Janie volunteers almost full-time, coming up with designs and helping others bring their ideas to life. She is committed to the project's success and encourages everyone involved to do their best work.

Margaret Starkie, Partnerships and Communications Manager at Volunteer Scotland and Panel Member for the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland said:

“Volunteer Scotland were delighted to sponsor the first Social Enterprise Scotland Volunteer Champion award. The category was not an easy one to judge as all nominees go above and beyond in their volunteering roles. The award highlighted how valuable and inspirational volunteers are across our communities. Congratulations to Janie on a deserved win!”
