Billy and The Terrence Higgins Trust
24 October 2014
I started volunteering through being interested in music and wanting to become involved in something I am passionate about.
I found the perfect volunteering opportunity at a hospital radio station. Volunteering at this for 13 years, the work I did made a difference to patients through such a simple act, whilst also benefitting myself through working in something I loved!
Having experienced the support that the Terrence Higgins Trust offers first hand over the past five years, I wanted to give back and help those who may find themselves in a similar position, and so began volunteering over two years ago.
At the THT, my roles include working as a “meet and greet” at the fast test clinics - I act as a general support and put people at ease as they attend the clinics and wait for the results. These clinics are extremely important, particularly as a lot of people may find local doctors not offering the privacy that this charity can.
Being a volunteer has had a huge impact on my life, and has helped me through an extremely difficult time. It offers you a sense of achievement and satisfaction, gaining new skills and allowed me to become socially active again, and get back out there!
