Updated: 24/03/20

As of 23 March 2020 the government introduced 3 new measures:

  1. Requiring people to stay at home, except for very limited purposes
  2. Closing non-essential shops and community spaces
  3. Stopping all gatherings of more than two people in public

Every citizen must comply with these measures effective immediately.

What does this mean for volunteering?

Only services which are essential should be provided in communities. Volunteers should be encouraged to look out for their neighbours. Please ensure you heed all relevant advice around staying safe and keeping others around you safe.

If it still makes sense to create a volunteering opportunity at this time, you can do so as follows:

Locally:  If your organisation has volunteer roles based in one or two local authority areas in Scotland, you should contact the relevant local Volunteer Centre(s) and they can help with getting your opportunities advertised.

If your organisation has volunteer roles based across several local authority areas in Scotland, you may be eligible to use the Volunteering Zone to publish them directly to our website.

The ways you can get involved / help are changing. There are new resources available and ways to provide support at this time.

For those organisations that have capacity to help (and can do so safely):

For those that need help, you can register with the Community Assistance Directory: Help needed

Support is available

We anticipate organisations grappling with new issues through the virus, for example you may need to:

  • design entirely new roles in response to COVID-19
  • manage volunteers remotely
  • consider PVG requirements to support vulnerable people
  • risk assess your processes

If you’re promoting opportunities through a local volunteer centre, they will provide advice (such as the above) around each of your individual roles.

If you're promoting opportunities at this time to more than one local area and are registered on the Volunteering Zone, then please contact Volunteer Scotland for additional guidance if you need it.

Check out our FAQ's page for more information on advertising opportunities and guidance for updating or removing them.

Please note: Volunteer Scotland do not directly manage or advertise opportunities on behalf of organisations and are not responsible for the content of advertisements. The opportunities displayed in our opportunity search have been created and published either by local Volunteer Centres or by the organisations themselves.
