We’re still at a very early stage in coming to terms with the implications of the Brexit vote and the shock of it all.
I’ve long held the view that a country gets the volunteering it deserves. In other words, a look at the volunteering that’s happening tells you all you need to know about the character, values, histories, and people in a nation. The next period for the UK will be a battle for values and identity. This will have a profound impact on our volunteering story. This will play out in all the different kinds of volunteer action. Formal volunteers providing services, mutual support and community based voluntary activities, and democratic participation.
The dividing lines are now so strong between leave and remain, young and old, rich and poor, and country to country that the resolution of these will I think, determine the future course of volunteering in Scotland.
