Volunteering through your work makes you 13% happier!

27 November 2017

Here’s some fantastic news for anyone involved in employer supported volunteering – volunteering through work has been shown to have a positive impact on individual wellbeing.

Social platform Neighbourly recently commissioned a survey to gain greater understanding of the attitudes around happy, healthy communities and the value of volunteering. They discovered that employees who volunteer through work are 13% happier.

This means that the employers and volunteering organisations who invest time and resources into employer supported volunteering opportunities can be confident that volunteering is having a positive impact, not only for the community and the organisation’s beneficiaries, but also for volunteers themselves – and that has a benefit for the employer as well, it’s a win-win-win situation!

As with all volunteering, Volunteer Scotland recognises that the impact of volunteering on wellbeing will look different – and will be felt to a greater or lesser extent – by different people. And for volunteering to have a positive impact on wellbeing, people need to have a rewarding and enjoyable volunteer experience.

We’d love to hear from anyone who is taking part in employer supported volunteering about your experience. Contact us to share your story.

For employers and volunteering organisations, we know that it can be challenging to consistently deliver that rewarding and enjoyable experience. Responsibility for good practice is ideally shared between both parties, working in partnership. Volunteer Scotland can provide support and guidance for you to make sure employee volunteering is effective and meets the objectives of everyone involved.

For employers, we offer the UK quality standard Investing in Volunteers for Employers, which can be approached as a development tool and celebrates good practice in ESV delivery.

For volunteering organisations, we also have an ESV workbook that can now be downloaded from the Volunteer Scotland website.

If there’s anything else that we can do to support you in your volunteering, please contact us.

And for everyone who is already delivering, or taking part in, employer supported volunteering – thank you for helping to make the world a happier place!
