Ian and environmental volunteering
22 June 2015
Ian Ross, 16, a pupil at The Royal High School in Edinburgh started volunteering aged 12 after going to a YoungScot event
Ian currently spends some of his spare time working with the Junior Climate Challenge Fund (JCCF), managed by Keep Scotland Beautiful (funded by the Scottish Government). As part of the JCCF panel, Ian works with his fellow panel members to assess applications for funding from organisations keen to put sustainability at the heart of their activities.
Ian previously volunteered with Network Rail Ambassadors and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).
Ian said: “I first began volunteering after a YoungScot event when I was in 1st year - it seemed like a fun way to spend my time, help others and meet people."
Ian has continued volunteering over the past few years and finds it "highly rewarding" on a personal level. He also reckons that the experience he's gaining and the skills he's developed will help him when he's applying for jobs.
Ian's advice to any young person considering volunteering - "just got for it".
