About Opportunity

Can you help young people take part in activities to build their independence skills which can help improve their health and social well-being? Aberlour Options – runs a BFF (Best Friends Forever) group for young adults with a Learning Disability and/or Autism, who have left school up to and including the age of 25. The aim of BFF is to support and enable young adults to build on their independence skills such as cooking and budgeting and be supported with the transition in to adulthood. Volunteers will- Help build on the young adult’s existing and emerging life skills including independence, friendship and social skills Support young adults to express their ideas and views on activities and support them on outings and activities Spend your time talking to the young adults, helping them to feel valued and listened to; build their confidence and self-esteem.

About Aberlour Options - Fife

Aberlour Options - Fife provides a range of support through outreach and residential short breaks for children and young people with learning disabilities up to the age of 18 years. They also run a BFF (Best Friends Forever) group for young adults with a Learning Disability and/or Autism, who have left school up to and including the age of 25 years. The aim of BFF is to support and enable young adults to be involved in shaping the development of the service and take a role in leading on the service activities. The aim is for the service to be peer led and for the young adults to have ownership of it.

Skills & Experience

Volunteers should have:- Experience of working with children & young people with learning disabilities. A knowledge of some of the issues affecting this group & an ability to work well with them. Good communication & listening skills. Experience with building confidence & self-esteem; ability to encourage & motivate young people to participate in activities and fundraising opportunities. A specific skill set in a social activity. A non-judgmental approach to people & empathy.

Travel Details

Activities occur within and around the Glenrothes area, all travel expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

Frequency & Commitment

Minimum 4 hours per fortnight and a minimum commitment of 6 months.
