A volunteer's view on involving young people
16 June 2015
Following our recent Young People in Scotland Survey we've been reaching out to hear from young volunteers from across the country.
Amy Cowan has volunteered with the Youth Council, The Youth Arts Network and currently volunteers with Young Scot (TAG). There are few better people to ask on the importance of involving young people.
Here's what Amy has to say:
"Young people are our present and future! In our local council we have youth council meetings where activities and questions are put forward to young people in youth friendly ways so that companies or the council can get these opinions or views.
"I think it is very important for both the young person to be involved in decision making (and in helping others) but also for the company to get the view of young people, a major part of our society.
"It’s amazing how alike young people's answers are to adults, for example we held a Youth Hustings and even I, as a young person and someone who spends most of my life volunteering, was shocked to hear how amazing and valid the arguments and questions were.
"Involving young volunteers is amazing as long as it's done in a youth friendly way. Both the company and the young volunteer gain a lot from this experience."
