Stirling's Festival of Volunteering

27 September 2017

Well, that’s it for 2017

Volunteer Festival _logo (SQUARE)Scotland’s first ever festival of volunteering, held in Stirling from 21-26 September, attracted more than 1400 people, including over 70 organisations and charities, to a series of events throughout the city.

We are very pleased by the response. So much so, we are already planning for another Festival in Stirling in 2018 and to encourage other Festivals of volunteering around the country.

Over 550 people came along to the festival’s fun day on Saturday, which kicked off with a cycle treasure hunt. A host of activities for all the family were also laid on in King’s Park, with everything from water walkers and a giant inflatable slide to a feature bike track and a storytelling tent. Nearly 30 local organisations and charities also took part in the day, showcasing local volunteering opportunities in and around Stirling.

The festival saw ten events take place across the city in just six days, with a number of events for volunteers from an awards ceremony and networking event to a conference for volunteer managers.

The line-up also included the return of the city’s popular crowd funding event, Stirling Soup which was won by Indie Flynn of Square Peg, a small charity which works with vulnerable children to produce cartoons. The money raised at the event, £510, will be used by Indie to host an ‘Oscars’ style ceremony for the young animators.

What next for the Festival?

Our ambition is to see the Stirling Festival run again in 2018 and we will be asking people to come together in December 2017 to design the content, as happened in 2017. If you would like to come please get in touch

Evaluation

We have asked an external evaluator to look at Stirling’s Festival of Volunteering 2017 and that evaluation will be published here in the coming weeks. We want to learn from 2017, understand what worked, what could have gone better and how do we should build on 2017 to encourage even more people to participate through volunteering.

Festivals of Volunteering taking place all over Scotland from 2018?

We’re busy drawing up plans to support that aspiration. We have already been approached by community groups around the country interested in developing their own Festival of Volunteering. We are keen to support and help. We will certainly publish resources on this site in the coming weeks and months, based on our learning but please do get in touch if you are thinking of developing a Festival of Volunteering in your community.
